A towbar for most cars in South Africa costs between about R4,250 and R6,500 for a fixed towbar and between about R5,950 and R9,150 for a detachable one, delivered, with the wiring harness included. What is included in the price
- The towbar and its fitting hardware. Each towbar is made for a specific vehicle and bolts to that vehicle's own mounting points.
- The wiring harness. Almost every towbar listing includes it, and the listing title says so: "Wiring Harness Included".
- Delivery. Delivery is free anywhere in South Africa and usually takes 1 to 3 days.

What makes one towbar cost more than another
The type of towbar
- Fixed (swan neck). The tow ball stays on the vehicle permanently. This is the lowest-priced type for most cars.
- Detachable. The neck and tow ball come off when you are not towing, so nothing shows behind the bumper. On this site the middle price of a detachable towbar is about R2,200 more than the middle price of a fixed one.
- Flanged ball. The tow ball bolts onto a plate. It is the usual type on bakkies and larger SUVs.
- Tube step. A rear step for a bakkie or van with the towbar built in.
The vehicle
A towbar is designed around one vehicle's chassis and bumper, so the same type of towbar costs different amounts on different cars. A fixed towbar for a current VW Polo Vivo is R4,170.19, and a fixed towbar for a Toyota Corolla Cross is R5,708.57.
The wiring harness
Most towbars come with a universal harness. For some vehicles Brink also makes a plug-and-play harness that connects to the vehicle's own plugs, and where that exists we list it as a separate option at a different price. On the current Toyota Hilux the flanged ball towbar is R5,493.08 with the universal harness and R5,732.39 with the plug-and-play harness.
What does fitting cost?
The prices on this site are for the towbar and harness delivered to you; fitting is separate. We offer fitting in Cape Town, Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban and Howick. The cost depends on the vehicle, so please get in touch with our sales team for a fitting quote.
